THE FURNACE KITCHEN – Ironbridge Gorge Museum
Adaptive Reuse | Industrial Heritage | Curtain Wall Enclosure | Visitor Facilities

Osbornes Architects delivered the adaptive reuse of an underutilised area beneath the North Lights Building, part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum complex. Historically, this space housed an old railway siding, forming an important but hidden element of the site’s industrial past. The project sought to transform the area into a modern, functional space while celebrating its historic context.

To achieve a lightweight and visually sensitive enclosure, the proposals introduced a curtain wall system, providing transparency, improved daylighting and a contemporary architectural expression that contrasts respectfully with the original industrial fabric. Osbornes worked closely with kitchen suppliers, contractors and the client team to integrate new facilities seamlessly within the constraints of the historic envelope.

The completed scheme successfully blends industrial heritage character with a clean, contemporary interior, delivering a high-quality space that enhances the visitor experience and supports the ongoing evolution of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum site.
