BRIGHTON SEA LIFE CENTRE
Listed Building Fabric Repairs | Aquarium Tank Refurbishment | Day–Night Visitor Experience
Osbornes Architects helped to deliver the fourth and final phase of the long-term redevelopment of the Brighton SEA LIFE Centre, the world’s oldest operating aquarium and a highly significant Grade II* listed structure. This final phase focused on the repair and retheming of the Ocean Tank area, bringing both the historic building fabric and the tank infrastructure up to modern standards.
Works included extensive structural repairs to the Listed Building, conservation-led interventions to safeguard the original Victorian architecture, and specialist repairs to the Ocean Tank itself. As part of the redevelopment, a new large-format viewing window was introduced, significantly enhancing the visual connection between visitors and the marine life.
Improved access arrangements and a sophisticated lighting strategy were also developed to achieve a dramatic day-and-night effect within a single exhibition, creating a world-first immersive experience for guests.
This final phase completes a multi-year programme of upgrades that has revitalised the attraction while protecting its historic significance.
