HALFKEY, MALVERN – Contemporary Low-Carbon Replacement Dwelling
Sustainable Design | Contemporary Vernacular Architecture | Replacement Farmhouse

Halfkey Farmhouse is a new-build domestic property in Malvern, created as a contemporary replacement for the former farmhouse on the site. The design adopts a modern architectural language while drawing inspiration from the traditional forms and materials of the local Worcestershire vernacular, achieving a refined balance between contemporary living and rural character.

Internally, the house provides open, naturally bright spaces arranged to make the most of the dramatic views over the surrounding countryside. Large areas of glazing and carefully considered orientation ensure that daylight and landscape are integral to the experience of the home.

Sustainability formed a core part of the brief. The dwelling incorporates several low-carbon technologies aimed at reducing operational energy use and long-term environmental impact:

  • Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) for efficient, low-carbon heating

  • Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) to enhance air quality and minimise heat loss

  • Rainwater harvesting system supplying the WCs and washing machine

  • Enhanced building fabric performance to reduce CO₂ emissions

While the house maintains a largely traditional external appearance, these integrated systems ensure it performs to modern environmental standards, delivering a comfortable and environmentally responsible family home.
